EPISODE 8: CHRISTMAS SPECIAL – SURVIVING THE BAM EARTHQUAKE, IRAN, WITH GUEST, RUTH MILLINGTON
In this episode, I swap seats and speak to Don Robbie about the most extreme journey I’ve ever been on.
In 2003, my best friend and I were Christmas visitors to Bam, Iran. On Boxing Day at 5.26am local time, a magnitude 6.5 earthquake hit the city. The quake destroyed 90% of the town and eventually led to the tragic deaths of over 26,000 Iranians. We were staying at a local guesthouse which was levelled to the ground by the quake. I awoke to find myself in the rubble and was saved by my friend – dragging me out by my feet. Over the next 30 hours – using mostly our bare hands and in our pyjamas and bare feet – we began a frantic rescue attempt to save 12 people buried alive beneath our hotel ruins.
I also discuss how post-traumatic stress disorder and trauma affected me, the impact it had on my relationships, and how writing my upcoming book was part of my healing journey.
