RUTH MILLINGTON

AWARD-WINNING WRITER, PODCASTER & ADVENTURE TRAVELLER

‘AFTERSHOCK’ WINS THE 2021 PAGE TURNER AWARDS, WRITING AWARD FOR NON-FICTION!

“It’s an honour to receive this award for a memoir that was extremely challenging to write. I’m thrilled my work has been recognised, and I dedicate this award to the thousands who died or were affected by the Bam earthquake.”

– Ruth Millington

I really wasn’t expecting this, so I’m bowled over to have won the 2021 Page Turner Awards, Writing Award for non-fiction! It still hasn’t sunk in! I was competing against writers from over 20 countries and the competition was fierce. I’m having a slight bout of imposter syndrome which has been made worse by the fact that I never expected to be on a Zoom call with my childhood idol at the online awards ceremony on 26 October 2021 hosted by Ken and Paula Sheridan, the creators of the Page Turner Awards. The special guest was the American writer/director and actor of Starsky and Hutch fame, Paul Michael Glaser!! I sneaked in a few large glugs of wine to calm my nerves!

‘Aftershock’ has been so close with other awards. It was shortlisted in the 2019 Northern Writers Awards, NorthBound Book Award then was named finalist/runner up in 2020, Mslexia Memoir and Life-Writing Competition. In September 2021 an extract of the manuscript was shortlisted in the 2021 Yeovil Literary Prize, Writing Without Restriction Award. I was determined to see the manuscript win something and now that dream has been fulfilled my next ambition is for the manuscript to be published by a publishing house which appreciates and understands the importance of this story.
